The Great Commission

We have been looking at the last commands Jesus gave to his disciples these past few weeks. Today, we come to the “Great” commission. We have seen that in each of the Gospels and in the book of Acts, Jesus repeated a commission to His disciples. This repetition was for emphasis. This repetition was for remembrance. This repetition was for importance.

In Matthew 28:18-20 we see

  • Christ, who holds all authority, commissions us with a universal task…
    • Therefore, we must go
  • This task is to make disciples (apprentices) in every ethno-linguistic group
    • Making disciples begins with repentance of sin, trust in Jesus, and publicly acknowledging Jesus as Savior and Lord
    • It continues with teaching for the goal of spiritual transformation
  • This task can only be accomplished by full dependence on Jesus’ ceaseless presence and power
  • This task has as its goal the eternal worship of the triune God
