How close can you get to sin and not sin?

A key theme from this week’s message is this: We do not have to experience evil personally. We can trust God’s warnings against it. In other words, if God has warned of a danger in a certain kind of behavior, I don’t need to try it out to see if it’s “true for me.”

Hang on tightly to what you know! Remember what you’ve been taught! Trust in God…

Here are some sermon notes directly from the message:

Word of Encouragement

Revelation 2:24-25
I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who haven’t known “the so-called secrets of Satan**” — as they say — I am not putting any other burden on you. Only hold on to what you have until I come.
(**deceptive promises of secret spiritual knowledge through false religions.)
  • Put a protective “firewall” between yourself and bad teaching
  • Stay away from all forms of evil (don’t allow pride, pressure, or curiosity lead into evil practices)
  • Particularly important about promises of “deeper” wisdom or “secret” knowledge
  • We don’t have to experience evil personally. We can trust God’s warnings against it.
  • Hang on tightly to what you already know and have been doing. Remember that Jesus is coming!

Promise to Overcomers

The one who conquers and who keeps my works to the end: I will give him authority over the nations —and he will rule them with an iron scepter; he will shatter them like pottery —just as I have received this from my Father. I will also give him the morning star.
Remember Jesus’ royal authority, glorious splendor, and sustaining presence, now and forever, will more than compensate for any and all sacrifices made.
